Since 10 May 2006, Tungurahua Volcano, 135 km southeast of Quito, has produced strong explosions and hundreds of tremors, with moderate and strong emissions of steam and gas. Loud roars and incandescent rocks coming from the volcano are reported daily. 16 May 2006 the President of Ecuador declared a state of emergency in several villages surrounding Tungurahua.
