On 22 August 2013, a 15-year-old boy from the Issyk-Kul region was hospitalized in the Ak-Suu regional hospital with complaints of high fever and the appearance of skin buboes. The patient was hospitalized in the intensive care unit with the diagnosis of "a suspected bubonic form of plague" and died on the evening of the same day. Pathologists confirmed the diagnosis as a form of bubonic plague. On 27 of August 2013, three more people were hospitalized with suspected bubonic plague in the same hospital and region. At time of reporting, 131 people (33 of them medical staff) who had contact with the boy are hospitalized and isolated. Six villages of Ak-Suu district are at the highest risk, with two other villages totally isolated.
