Event: TC Tropical Cyclone Number: 1994-000020 Country: IND India Location: Date (YMD): 1994-10-31 Time: Duration: Magnitude: Information Source: UN DHA Comments: The severe cyclonic storm that hit southeast India on 31 October 1994 with wind speed exceeding 125 km per hour whipped the flat coastline from Nellore in Andhra Pradesh to cuddlier south of Madras flooding low-lying areas and rendering thousands of people living in thatched huts homeless. Hundreds of trees were uprooted, communications disrupted and services of several suburban and long-distance trains had to be suspended. In Tamil Nadu state, 30 people were killed. State government organized rescue and relief operations, including food distribution to affected population and stocking of medicines in hospitals to take precautions against epidemics. Train and road transport services are meanwhile mostly restored. Heavy rains affected southern coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh on 1 - 3 November 1994 and claimed 93 lives.
