Comments:
As of 29 August, over 570,482 Afghans are estimated to have been internally displaced since the start of the year (2021) out of which 80 percent are women and children. These circumstances have resulted in an increase in humanitarian needs and assistance to the internally displaced population and initialized a new wave of displaced people fleeing to neighbouring countries (primarily Pakistan and Iran) to seek refuge and safety. With the situation evolving rapidly and remaining uncertain, UNHCR predicts over 515,000 additional people to flee across the borders as displaced refugees. According to local media sources, Afghans seeking safe refuge from Taliban rule poured in from all corners of the country to form jostling queues at the doorstep of neighbouring Pakistan, with which Afghanistan shares its longest border. Afghans nationals have already started arriving in Pakistan via the shared border across the Durand line covering 2,670 kilometres. Traffic at the border crossing at Chaman in Pakistan has also risen four-fold with as many as 20,000 entering the country each day.
