| Comments: | The dengue outbreak in Bangladesh has taken a worrisome turn as the number of cases and fatalities continue to rise, signalling an alarming trend this year. The total number of fatalities from the mosquito-borne disease in Bangladesh is 127 (female 73 and male 54) this year, which is five times higher compared to 2022. Dengue has already spread in 60 districts of the country.
In Dhaka city, only 63 hospitals (20 public and 43 private) out of several hundred hospitals/clinics are assigned to report dengue cases to the current surveillance system. According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) of Bangladesh, mosquito density is much higher this year than in 2019-2020. This year, the monsoon has come late and is expected to end later than usual. On 18 July 2023, a total of 1,533 patients were admitted to the hospital due to dengue. As of 18 July 2023, overall the total number stood at 24,000 patients (male 63% and female 37%) who were admitted to the hospital and a total of 127 patients died due to dengue infection. According to the DGHS, it is identified that within Dhaka City Corporation, the number of dengue cases and the number of death cases in July 2023 are higher than that of July 2021 and July 2022. Dhaka city alone accounted for about 80% of this year's dengue-related deaths and 64.5% of the total hospitalizations.
