Comments: The Democratic Republic of Congo has just recorded a new case of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) on 17 August 2022, in the town of Beni, Beni health zone, North Kivu province. According to the authorities, the history of this case goes back to 23 July 2022 with the hospitalisation of a 46 year old female patient, female and widowed at the Beni general referral hospital, who died in respiratory distress in a setting of HIV-TB immunodepression on 15 August 2022 in the Intensive Care Unit of the Beni HGR, in Beni Territory in North Kivu Province. A routine oro-pharyngeal swab was taken on 15 August 2022 by the HGR Beni team. The sample tested positive for EVD at the Beni laboratory and was confirmed at the INRB laboratory in Goma. Sequencing performed at the Rodolphe Mérieux Laboratory of INRB-Goma confirmed the Ebola Zaire strain and further demonstrated that this case is linked to a strain from the tenth outbreak of 2018 in November in Beni and not to a new introduction of the virus. The risk of possible spread of this epidemic is high due to untraced contact cases. According to the latest SITREP, 179 contact cases have been identified, of which 39% of high-risk contacts have not yet been traced, including 5 in neighbouring health zones (4 in Oicha and 1 in Mutwanga, a town on the border with Uganda). All contact cases found and the remains buried by the DRC to date have been collected and tested with negative results so far. The DRC is continuing the 21-day follow-up on these different contact cases. The Beni health zone is surrounded by several health zones, all of which are part of the Beni territory, which has an estimated population of 1,487,608 inhabitants, or 297,522 households (Rapport Etat Civil, 3rd Quarter, updated on 31 March 2021).
