| Comments: | Between 21-23 February 2026, severe weather—including strong winds, dust storms, and snowstorms—hit multiple provinces across Mongolia, worsening ongoing dzud conditions and disrupting travel during the busy Lunar New Year period. Winds reached 18-24 m/s, with gusts up to 31 m/s, while temperatures plunged to -30°C to -48°C, causing low visibility, blocked roads, and delays in rescue operations. The storms resulted in five deaths from exposure, one child hospitalized with frostbite, and over 100 people rescued after becoming stranded or lost. More than 10,000 herder households across several provinces remain highly affected, with many isolated due to snow-blocked routes. Livelihood impacts are severe, with over 4,900 livestock reported dead and grazing conditions deteriorating due to repeated snowfall, ice crusting, and depleted fodder reserves—further heightening humanitarian risks for already vulnerable herder communities. |
