Fiji's Meteorological Service says the damage caused by Tropical Cyclone Rae has severely impacted local communities.
A forecaster says TC Rae “came pretty close to some of the islands in the Lau group”. “The devastation on the ground is enormous in terms of reports of some houses that got damaged, vegetation, of course, got damaged as well, and even some of the jetties got swept away because of the waves that are associated with Tropical Cyclone Rae,” he says.
As of 12pm local time on Tuesday, TC Rae was located 215km south of Ono-i-Lau, with sustained winds of 110km/h and gusts up to 155km/h. The storm is moving further south at a speed of 23km/h, gradually exiting Fiji's waters.
