On Sempteber 7, the earthquake occured around 1500 local time (1200 GMT) and was followed by a series of strong aftershocks. The Athens Seismological Institute said the quake registered 5.9 on the Richter scale, and the epicentre was 20km (12.4 miles) north of the capital. The seismic shift occurred 5 to 10km below the ground.
